Matt McCue served in the U.S. Army, including a deployment to Iraq where he became interested in Iraqi farmers. Upon returning home Matt attended the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He completed a Master of Science in International Agricultural Development from the University of California, Davis in 2017.
Farmer Veteran Coalition assisted Matt in obtaining his first farm management position in 2008. In 2009, Matt began Shooting Star CSA, in Northern California, with fellow CASFS graduate Lily Schneider. They raised 15 acres of organic vegetables and had more than 250 CSA (community supported agriculture) subscribers. “I realize that in order to succeed I don’t need to travel endlessly. Like the plants, I can become a part of the environment and create a more meaningful bond with my world.”
Matt has been Farm Operations Manager at Christensen Farms LLC in McMinnville, Oregon since January 2019. He has day-to-day operational responsibility for the farm with hands on leadership for all aspects of its operations including safety, business development, customer relations, employee development and systems development. Matt oversees some 925 acres of orchards, including significant production of hazelnuts.
