James Webb is the Owner/Operator of Conway Cattle Company, a relatively small operation in the Blue Ridge Mountains of his youth in Madison, Virginia.

After high school, James enlisted as an infantryman in August 2005. After achieving honor graduate and soldier of the cycle in his basic training, James decided to volunteer for the Rangers. Awarded a spot in the 3rd Ranger Battalion, James later earned entry at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School. He decided to try the academy route to make as much of an impact as possible, especially after seeing life through the eyes of an infantry private. He ultimately felt the pull toward serving in combat like the men he had seen firsthand and grown to respect. James decided to return to the regiment in 2006 and served two combat tours to Afghanistan as a 60mm mortar gunner team leader in 2007 and 2008. His unit’s main objective was to defuse high-value terrorists and combat the foreign fighter threat.

Shortly after James’ second deployment, a drunk driver in Columbus, Georgia struck him and forced his early retirement as a sergeant. He spent five years undergoing various surgeries; upon a break from those operations, James was introduced to horses. “Being able to walk trails again and eventually learn how to work cows helped give me a purpose and personal pride again, especially after having to be taken care of like a child. My experiences riding horses and working with animals in the beautiful mountains helped me immensely. I decided to try sharing it with as many other Rangers or special operations soldiers as I could. Conway Cattle Company isn’t a nonprofit—it is just me farming and taking the time to let brothers visit brothers in a place they can enjoy and be able to talk freely about their experiences.”
