Maynard, Alvina

Owner/Operator

River Hill Ranch

Alvina Maynard is the owner operator of River Hill Ranch which exists to provide everyday luxury for your best life. Using regenerative agriculture techniques, alongside laying hens, guinea fowl, way too many ducks, and a pair of angora goats, she runs 50-100 alpacas for textile fiber and her award-winning alpaca meat products. River Hill Ranch hosts a number of agritourism experiences where the public is invited to explore, shop, and connect with both our farm and each other. Alvina is a trained fiber sorter/grader, a shearer, a fiber artist, and vends at the Lexington Farmers’ Market. Her operation helps to fill voids in a maturing alpaca livestock industry which she promotes by presenting at state and national agriculture events. Prior to alpaca ranching, Alvina was Active Duty Air Force. She continues to serve as a Reservist, regularly serving extended tours over the winter when farming slows down slightly. Her real full-time job however is being a work-at-home mom with her two children.

River Hill Ranch has received multiple grants, including an FVC fellowship for electric netting fence which are foundational to our rotational grazing management. River Hill is a USDA Value Added Producer Grant Recipient for alpaca clothing manufacturing, alpaca meat processing, marketing and sales. River Hill received a USDA NRCS CAIP grant for on-farm composing site improvement and expanding silvopasture with timber saplings. Our latest project is with USDA NRCS and Forest Service to conduct invasive species removal, exclusionary fence, and overall forest management.
