Former 1st Ranger Battalion Army Ranger Patrick Montgomery lost his brother-in-law, Jeremy, in combat during his first deployment and was tasked with doing the unimaginable – travel home with his body, deliver the devastating news to his sister of the loss of her husband, and then lay him to rest.

Patrick struggles with that memory every day, and writes about it on his website blog ‘Confessions of a Cattleman’ in the most reflective and expressive way – with honesty, sincerity, and raw emotion. He mourns the loss of a hero and a personal role model. The aftermath of emotions between anger, sadness, pain and grief overwhelmed him. He turned to drinking as a dangerous crutch for the first few years. Eventually he hit rock bottom. Then he decided he had to make a choice.

Now he’s turned those struggles into a fight to build a dream and a legacy worthy of Jeremy’s honor. For Patrick, that is through the acclaimed Wagyu beef operation he now runs just outside of Kansas City. Patrick employs an all-veteran staff under his Homegrown by Heroes label. And to make this story even sweeter, in 2019 KC Cattle Company gained National recognition and exploded practically overnight when their Wagyu beef hot dogs were featured as a standout in Food & Wine, and touted as “basically like eating a steak in a bun”.

They have quickly ramped up their operations, going from producing 200 pounds a month to 2,000 pounds a week! Patrick has found opportunity and healing through farming, and now he looks to give back to the very same people and communities he once served as a Ranger.
